Guide

Khor Fakkan, done properly.

Khor Fakkan is a small town with a lot packed in: a waterfront, hills and a waterfall behind it, and a mountain road that is half the day out. This is how a group spends one day there without rushing.

Why Khor Fakkan works as a day trip

Most east-coast days try to fit in three towns and end up as a long drive with photo stops. Khor Fakkan is better treated as the whole day. The town is compact, the sea is in front and the Hajar hills rise straight behind, so a group can see water, mountains and some history without getting back on the bus every twenty minutes.

It also belongs to Sharjah, even though it sits on the other side of the mountains, which surprises people. That matters for planning in one way: groups from Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain are closer than groups from Dubai, and the drive is the first thing to settle.

The mountain road is part of the trip

From central Dubai, allow about two hours by road, usually through Sharjah and then across the mountains on the Khor Fakkan road, the one with the tunnels. From Sharjah city it is closer to an hour and a half. The road is modern and well kept, but it climbs and bends, and a group of children or anyone prone to car sickness will notice. Ask people to sit forward and keep the windows closed and the air on.

There is a rest area with a viewpoint on the way. It is the one planned stop we recommend on the outward leg, because it breaks the drive in half and gives everyone a wash and a stretch before the town. We keep it short, around 20 minutes, so the day does not slide.

Heavy rain in the mountains can close roads for a while, mostly in winter. We watch the official warnings and, if the road is shut or unsafe on your date, we call you and offer a later start or another day.

A timed sample day from Dubai

Times are a guide. Venues set their own opening hours and rules, so confirm anything you want to enter before you fix the plan. We do not quote tickets, because each site sets its own.

  • 07:00, pick-up in Dubai, then the first stop is only a quick head count
  • 09:15, rest area on the mountain road: toilets, coffee, photographs of the valley
  • 10:15, arrive in Khor Fakkan, park near the waterfront and walk the corniche
  • 11:30, the amphitheatre above the sea, or the beach for a group that wants water
  • 12:45, lunch in town, with a table booked ahead for large groups
  • 14:15, drive into the hills for the waterfall and Al Rafisah Dam, a short run from the town
  • 16:00, one last stop at Shees Park, or coffee on the front for anyone who is tired
  • 16:30, depart for Dubai, back around 18:45 in normal traffic

Notice what is missing: no second town. If someone asks to add Fujairah, our Dubai to Fujairah page is the day for that, not an extra hour here.

The same day from Sharjah or Ajman

Starting in Sharjah or Ajman gives you an extra hour in the town. Leave at 08:00 instead of 07:00, spend the saved time on the waterfront or a boat trip, and still reach home before dark. The plan above holds, but the lunch can be longer and the hills can be unhurried.

Groups starting in Sharjah may also like bus rental in Sharjah, which covers school, staff and wedding groups in the emirate that owns Khor Fakkan.

Matching the day to the group

A school group wants a fixed lunch time, a toilet stop every two hours and a teacher count at each re-boarding. Put the waterfall in the morning while the children are fresh and keep the beach short; our school trip transport guide covers the paperwork and seat-belt questions.

A company team day suits a long lunch and the waterfront, with the hills as an optional extra for those who want a walk. Do not pack it. People remember the lunch.

Families and community groups are the ones who stay on the beach. If the sea is the point, drop the dam and give the water two hours. Boat and snorkelling trips are run by licensed operators, booked directly, and we deliver the group to the meeting point and wait.

Heat, water and what to bring

Summer on this coast is hot and humid, and the middle of the day is no time to climb a hillside. From June to September we suggest an earlier start, the waterfront in the morning, an indoor lunch and the road home before the evening peak. Winter is the easy season: mornings are cool, and the beach and the hills are comfortable all day.

Bring water, hats, a change of shoes for the waterfall path and a bag for wet clothes. Wear modest clothes if the group visits a mosque or a heritage site, and leave valuables on the person, not on the bus.

Which vehicle

A Sprinter is the most comfortable choice for up to 16 on this road. From 17 to 30, a 30-seater fits the town streets well. For 31 and over, use a 35-seater or a 50-seater coach, and tell us the stops so we can check coach parking at each. Town parking and the road up to the dam are not the same as the highway, and some spots suit a van better than a coach.

What it costs

We do not publish a Khor Fakkan price yet, so we will not make one up. The nearest published figure is our Dubai to Fujairah transfer, from AED 550 one way for a 14-seater van, against a typical market range of AED 600 to 850. A full-day booking is quoted for your actual route, hours and date, with extra stops and waiting shown before you confirm.

Our bus rental price guide shows what moves a quote. Send the date, headcount, pick-up point and stops through the booking form, and for the wider coast see bus rental in Fujairah.

Frequently asked.

Quick answers for this trip.

How long does it take to get to Khor Fakkan from Dubai?

About two hours by road outside peak traffic, usually through Sharjah and across the mountains. Plan a short rest stop on the way, so call it two and a half hours door to door.

Is one day enough for Khor Fakkan?

Yes, for the waterfront, the hills and a proper lunch. It is not enough if you add Fujairah or Dibba as well. Choose one plan.

Which emirate is Khor Fakkan in?

Sharjah. It sits on the Gulf of Oman coast, on the far side of the Hajar Mountains from Sharjah city.

Do you include entry tickets or boat trips?

No. Tickets, boat trips and snorkelling are booked directly with the operators, who set their own prices and hours. We take the group there and wait.

Can a 50-seater coach reach the waterfall and the dam?

Coaches use the main roads in town. The narrower roads into the hills and some car parks suit smaller vehicles, so we check your stops when we quote and say if you should switch to a minibus for that leg.

What happens if it rains?

Heavy rain can close mountain roads for a while. We watch official warnings, call you if the road is unsafe on the day, and offer a later start or a new date.

Can we leave from Sharjah instead of Dubai?

Yes. Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain are closer, which gives you an extra hour in town. Tell us the pick-up point and we adjust the times.
