Hatta Dam among the Hajar Mountains

Dubai to Hatta by bus: why groups go

Hatta is Dubai’s mountain enclave, tucked into the Hajar Mountains near the Omani border, and it is one of the most popular group days out in the Emirates. Companies book Dubai to Hatta bus hire for team days, schools for field trips, and families and friends for a weekend in the cooler air. The turquoise water of Hatta Dam, the trails at Hatta Wadi Hub and the restored Hatta Heritage Village are all within a few minutes’ drive of each other, so one bus and one driver can cover the whole day.

It is also one of the few day trips where the journey is part of the fun. The last stretch of the drive leaves the desert behind and climbs into the mountains, and most groups arrive already talking about the view.

The route and the timings

From central Dubai the drive takes about an hour and a half along the E44 Hatta Road, through open desert and then up into the mountains. Leave by 8 a.m. and the group is on the water before the heat of the day; most groups head home in the late afternoon and are back in Dubai by early evening.

We recommend full-day hire — ten hours — for a Hatta trip. The driver waits at each stop, moves the bus between the dam, Wadi Hub and the village, and keeps it cool for the moment people climb back on. For larger groups starting from several points, we can plan two vehicles that meet at Hatta and travel home separately.

A sample Hatta day

  • 07:45 — pick-up at your office, school or hotel
  • 09:15 — arrive at Hatta Dam for kayaking or a walk along the water
  • 11:30 — Hatta Wadi Hub for mountain biking, zip lines or archery
  • 13:30 — lunch
  • 15:00 — Hatta Heritage Village and the honey bee garden
  • 16:30 — depart for Dubai

This is a guide, not a fixed schedule. Activities at the dam and Wadi Hub are run by the venues themselves and booked directly with them; we build the transport around whatever programme you choose, and the driver adapts if the kayaking runs long.

Choosing a vehicle for the mountains

All of our vehicles are air-conditioned and every seat has a seat belt. The final stretch of the E44 climbs and bends through the mountains, so our drivers take it at a steady pace — worth knowing if anyone in the group gets travel sick.

Team days and school trips to Hatta

For companies, Hatta works well as a team day: a morning of kayaking or biking, a long lunch and an afternoon at the heritage village, with nobody driving home tired. For schools, the dam, the village and the bee garden fit geography, history and science topics, and Wadi Hub runs supervised outdoor activities. Our school trip transport guide covers planning in more detail.

Staying overnight in Hatta

Hatta has lodges, caravan sites and campsites run by local operators, and some groups make it a two-day trip — a team retreat, a scout camp or a family weekend. We can drop you on day one and collect you on day two, or keep the vehicle with the group throughout on multi-day hire. Tell us where you are staying so we can check vehicle access; some sites are reached by narrower roads that suit a minibus better than a full coach.

Practical tips for a group trip to Hatta

Hatta is best from October to April; summer days are very hot, even in the mountains. Bring water, sun protection and closed shoes for the trails. Parts of the dam and Wadi Hub involve steps and uneven ground, so let us know about anyone with limited mobility and we will plan the drop-off points accordingly. Agree a meeting point and a time at each stop, so nobody is left looking for the bus.

Send your date, headcount and pick-up point through the booking form. The written quote includes the vehicle, driver, fuel and Salik tolls, with any extra hours listed before you confirm.

Questions

Frequently asked.

How long is the drive from Dubai to Hatta by bus?

About an hour and a half from central Dubai along the E44 — a little longer from Dubai Marina or Jebel Ali and a little shorter from Mirdif or Al Qusais. We set the pick-up time to match your first activity, with a buffer for traffic leaving the city.

Can a 50-seat coach drive to Hatta?

Yes. Full-size coaches use the E44 and reach the main sights. If your programme includes narrower roads or a venue with limited coach parking, we will confirm access when we quote and suggest a smaller vehicle where needed.

Do you book the kayaks and activities at Hatta?

No. Activities at Hatta Dam and Hatta Wadi Hub are booked directly with those venues. We provide the bus and driver and build the transport timings around your activity bookings, so send us the confirmed times once you have them.

Is a half day long enough for a Hatta trip?

Usually not. With around three hours of driving in total, a five-hour half day leaves very little time in Hatta. Full-day hire of ten hours gives a comfortable morning on the dam, lunch and an afternoon stop before the drive home.

Can you pick up from Sharjah or Ajman for a Hatta trip?

Yes. Pick-ups from Sharjah and Ajman are common, and the drive time is often similar to starting in central Dubai. Give us the exact pick-up point and we will set the timings on the quote.

Is Hatta a good school trip?

Very. Hatta Dam, the heritage village and the bee garden suit geography, history and science topics, and Wadi Hub offers supervised outdoor activities. Every seat on our buses has a seat belt and the trip lead receives the driver’s details the day before.

What is the best time of year to visit Hatta by bus?

October to April, when daytime temperatures suit kayaking and walking. In summer, plan a much earlier start and a shorter programme, and keep the group close to shade and the bus between activities. Indoor stops such as the heritage village’s museums help break up a hot day.
